Penang Botanical Garden also known as Waterfall Gardens, established by the British way back in 1884 from an quarry site. The garden was founded in 1884 by Charles Curtis from Gardens and Forest Departments Straits Settlements. Beside being the arboretum living plants specimens, it is also the seat of botanical conservation, education and training. This garden is very important in the field of horticulture and landscaping development.

Inside this botanic garden, you can find various unique flowers such as the Cannon Ball Tree (Couropita Guanensis) and the large buttress roots of the Sengkuang Tree (Dracantamelon dao). Look out for the Pinang Palm (Areca Catechu) that lent its name to the island of Penang and the Black Lily (Tacca Integrifalia) with its unique purplish black coloured flowers.

Beside the flowers, you can also found the wildlife inhabiting the gardens. Commonly seen are the long-tailed Macaques, Dusky Leaf Monkeys, Blakc Giant Squirrels and myriad of insects and butterflies. Moreover, you could catch a view of the famous waterfall up on the hills above the reservoir.

How to Get There

Actually I have to visit Penang for bussiness trip, but lucky me that I have a little time to explore this city. Malaysia has so many places to explore and one of the famous city is Penang. Yesterday, my friend took me to taste one of famous Indian Rojak in Penang, now I'm going to explore Penang Botanical Garden. This park is located in Kebun Bunga Street 10350 Penang 8 kilo metres away from downtown. You can reach there by using car or Bus number 10 from Georgetown to this park.

  • This garden is open daily from 5 am to 8 pm. No entrance fee to this garden, so you can visit it freely.
  • Respect plants and animals here. Please don't remove, damage or intentionally disturb them.
  • Keep this garden clean. Do not litter. 
  • Stay on established trails.
  • Don't feed the monkeys.
  • Don't eat as you walk because monkeys love food and they like to snatch it from you.
  • Bring camera.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and hat.
